This is an invitation to dive in, explore the emotional landscapes of water, and some of the symbolism of the ‘Feminine’, through this immersive installation.
Meditate on the silent film projection of the underwater swimmers, naked in their own skin, at one with nature. Embody the rhythmic flow, the restorative, and other worldly quality of being in, and around the water.

Over the past 2 decades of making artwork in Dartmoor with other artists, and particularly this bit of the River Teign, I looked under the water with a snorkel and a GoPro to find this extraordinary sight of bodies and bubbles lit by the sunlight. This is footage I have collected over the years from 7am swims before the painting day starts.

The large-scale paintings are painted on site next to the river, one day for each painting only. It’s such a mission carrying the canvases, lunch and painting equipment through the woods -they have to be a one hit painting! Working like this pushes a distillation of idea further than you can go in one painting over a more extended period of time.

For those that don't know me well, the photos above shows the lengths I go to to make my work.
Here's my recent artist's bio FYI

Sonia’s creative portfolio spans over 3 decades. Born of a family of engineers, she started out as a freelance set builder, props, costume and model maker for film, TV, theatre, and carnivals, she later graduated from a traditional art school education, with First Class honours in Painting and The Painting Prize.
Sonia has since exhibited internationally, won large-scale glass commissions, and become a published poet. Throughout her career, and alongside developing a multi-disciplinary approach to her work, she continues to be a prolific painter.
Sonia lectured at Canterbury Christ Church University for over a decade on Fine Art degree programs and on the MA, ‘Myth Cosmology and the Sacred’ and ran drawing courses at Canterbury Cathedral. She continues to run a yearly Artists’ expedition to Dartmoor and has worked with groups of artists from Iona to India. She is described as a ‘force of nature’ and a ‘midwife to the imagination’ by her contemporaries and students.
Sonia continues to freelance for major cinema and TV titles as a scenic painter, and occasionally as a model-maker, painting and installing world class displays and interactives for museums and exhibitions.
Sonia is a mother, yacht skipper and races dinghies.
